Lecturer on Social Studies
Lowry Pressly

Lowry Pressly is a Lecturer on Social Studies. His research interests are broad but include political theory, ethics, epistemology, and literature. His book on privacy—tentatively titled Raids on the Inarticulate: Privacy and Being Unaccountable—is under contract with Harvard University Press. In that book he offers novel arguments for the value of being unknown, both to oneself and others, and the importance of coming apart to human flourishing. Previous versions of this project received the American Political Science Association’s Leo Strauss award for the country’s best dissertation in political philosophy and Harvard’s Toppan Prize for the best dissertation in political science, among others. A second book and series of articles on the stranger and his fundamental role in human life are also underway; a philosophical monologue from this project is forthcoming in Political Theory. Pressly’s criticism, essays, and fiction appear widely. He received a PhD in political theory from Harvard and a BA in English literature from the University of Georgia.
